Origin
The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, the messenger of God.
He rejected the worship of idols that people in Makkah believed in. He came to believe in the One God known as Allah. One night, he was in his cave above the city where he would spend time alone in prayer. Muslims says that an angel named Jibreel (or Gabriel) commanded Muhammad to “read” or “recite”. He was incapable of reading, but he realized that he must preach the word and recite to the people. He passed the word on to his followers, who wrote them down in a book called the Qur’an.

Memorizing the Qur'an
Because at the time books were readily available, it was common for people to memorize the Qur'an by heart. This showed the strong devotion to the religion and submission to the one and only God, Allah. Committing the Qur'an to memory served as an act of preservation and any person who is able to accomplish this is called a hafiz.
